The Language of England that is most widely spoken is English and is in fact one of the most common characteristics of British culture. However there are large-scale regional variations in accents and dialects and it may be difficult to understand strong regional accents in other parts of England.
Also, as a consequence of the long historical relations of England with other parts of the world during the colonial period, intermingling of cultures has taken place. This has resulted in the development of populations speaking foreign languages in England. Some of the foreign languages that are widely spoken in England today are Greek, Turkish, Bengali and Punjabi.
