The official Religion of England is Christianity. The majority of English belong to the Church of England, which became independent of Rome in the 16th century.
In 1533 during the reign of Henry VIII England dissociated itself from the Roman Catholic Church to form the Anglican Church. However in 1553 Queen Mary again changed the religion of the country to Catholicism.
Finally, when Elizabeth I became the Queen of England (1558) Britain became a Protestant country by law. The Queen is the head of the Church of England.
Britain is a multi religious society in which everyone enjoys the right to religious freedom. Though the Church of England is a Protestant Church there are also many Roman Catholics and Methodists.
People are widely tolerant in their views towards other faiths and pay due respect to all other religions and also to those who have no religious faith.
Statistics shows that there as of 2001 there were around 38 million people (2001) in England and Wales who followed Christianity as a faith. In addition there are many Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Sikhs and persons of other religious beliefs residing in England as well.
